Friday Pride Day
Students, faculty and staff wear green every Friday to show their Mean Green pride throughout the year.
For over 50 years, the Talons, the UNT student spirit organization, aims to preserve Mean Green traditions. Talons perpetuate UNT's history of pride and longstanding traditions. Members of Talons build the Annual Bonfire, which is lit the Friday night of Homecoming, a tradition with began in the 1930’s. With the love of UNT, Talons support every Mean Green event with Boomer the Cannon, Model A and Spirit Bell. For more information regarding the Talons visit studentactivities.unt.edu/talons.
Boomer the Cannon
The modern cannon is a scale replica of a model used in the U.S.-Mexican War and is the only smooth-bore muzzle loader (loaded from the front using black powder) on a college campus. Boomer is fired at special campus events and at football games to signal scores.
The Talons car is a green 1929 Ford Model A Tudor Sedan built in 1931. It was donated to UNT by alumnus Rex Cauble ('74). The Model A, also known as the Green Machine, is driven by the Talons Cannon Crew at home football games, parades and other special occasions. This fall it debuted a new two-tone black and green paint job.
Brought to Denton from Michigan in 1891, the 2,000-pound bell was originally used to signal class changes and evening curfew. It served as a sound of victory for many years until a crack was found within. The Talons dedicated the original bell to the university in 1982, and it was placed in the University Union. The bell's 1600-pound successor can be heard at any home football game ringing with pride.
The Pit Crew is the official student section for North Texas Basketball. The Mean Green students are loud and proud and give the Super Pit the reputation as being an intimidating place to play. Students can visit the Pit Crew area before tip-off at all Men’s Basketball games at Gate B. Students are encouraged to get there as early as possible so that they can get their Mean Green giveaways as well as receive the cheer sheet. The Pit Crew area will close just after tip-off.
