As you travel along Maple Street between Rawlins Hall and the Coliseum, you will notice five new trees added to the landscape. On April 27, the UNT Student Sustainability/We Mean Green Fund and UNT Facilities partnered to celebrate Arbor Day.

Upholding their mission to create a clean and beautiful Denton, environmental nonprofit Keep Denton Beautiful (KDB) donated the trees for the student-led service activity. The trees were chosen to match the aesthetic of the existing greenery with the goal of ensuring effective long-term sustainability.

Since 2008, Tree Campus USA has commended UNT for its work in planting and preserving trees on campus. The Tree Campus USA program recognizes college and university campuses that:

  • Effectively manage their campus trees.
  • Develop connectivity with the community beyond campus borders to foster healthy, urban forests.
  • Strive to engage their student population utilizing service learning opportunities centered on campus, and community, forestry efforts.

“We intend to keep our Mean Green tradition of providing green spaces on campus for students, faculty and visitors to enjoy,” said D. Deidre Humphrey, sustainability graduation cord coordinator.
