FAQs

When does First Flight begin?

First Flight 2023 begins Sunday, August 13, 2023 and goes through Sunday, August 20, 2023. Students will be in required scheduled sessions Monday, August 14, 2023 through Wednesday, August 16, 2023. Students will have flexibility throughout the week to build their own schedule to meet their First Flight Expectations and explore their interests. Please refer to the First Flight 2023 Schedule at a Glance for more details.

First Flight 2023 Schedule at a Glance

Is First Flight mandatory?

Yes, First Flight is a required program for all new freshmen as it is an integral part to your transition to the University. First Flight is UNT's official welcome week program.  Attendance will be taken at all First Flight events throughout the week.

How will participation and attendance be tracked?

First Flight Leaders will take attendance for the students in their group at all of their required scheduled sessions (Small Group Meetings, Our Community, and Convocation).

For Special Interest Sessions, College Day, and First Flight Programs students will check in to each program during the scheduled time.

For online programs, students should complete all of the activities (knowledge check quiz , reflection, etc.) in the module and their attendance will be automatically recorded in the Canvas gradebook.

If you will be absent or miss a program, that is okay. First Flight is unlike New Student Orientation in that you get to make your own schedule for the week. There are things we are asking you to do, but for the most part you can choose when you complete them. Please visit with your First Flight Leader or RA if you have questions about your attendance.

What if I need an exemption?

We understand that some students may have conflicts during First Flight and may wish to be excused from some or all programming. On occasion, Orientation and Transition Programs may grant exemptions to students who demonstrate conflicts that are deemed sufficient to warrant an exemption. You will receive a response from an Orientation and Transition Programs staff member before First Flight Week begins on if your exemption was approved.

Examples of potentially warranted exemptions include, but are not limited to, medical need, dependent child care, severe illness, unexpected family emergencies, or active military duty.

First Flight 2023 Exemption Request Form

Is there a make-up policy?

Students who do not meet their First Flight Program expectations will be enrolled in an online make-up module after classes start so they can get important information about UNT policies, resources, and academic deadlines.

When do I move in?

Please visit housing.unt.edu for complete details on the residence hall move-in process.

Will meals be provided?

Students living on-campus can start using their meal-plan during First Flight Week. Visit dining.unt.edu for more information about meal plans. Commuter students can request a meal ticket each day they are in required sessions from their First Flight Leader.

First Flight Leaders

What is a First Flight Leader (FFL)?

First Flight Leaders are mentors or guides to new freshman during First Flight Week. For students living on campus, their First Flight Leader is their Resident Assistant (RA). All FFL's will be expected to facilitate small group meetings with their students, encourage participation in programs during First Flight, and serve as a positive role model of a successful student at UNT.

Faculty and Staff Guide

First Flight Programs

First Flight programs are hosted by various departments on campus. Students will select at least 5 programs (one in each of the following categories).

  • My Prep - Make sure students are academically prepared for the start of classes
  • My Life - Help students determine how they are going to be engaged on campus
  • My Health and Wellness - Help students develop healthy habits in college
  • My Future - Help students chart a path during college to help them achieve their future career and life goals
  • Our Community - Help students learn what it means to be a part of our caring community

Special Interest Sessions

Special Interest Sessions are designed to give students an opportunity to meet a UNT faculty member, learn something “cool,” and get a sense of what a large classroom lecture experience will be like. Students are required to attend at least one Special Interest Session as a part of their First Flight Requirements. Our hope is to have representation from all of the UNT Colleges and Schools so students have an opportunity to connect with faculty members in their program.
