Eco Reps Green Tips

Walk or Bike More

In addition to helping you live a healthier lifestyle, trying to cut down your carbon emissions helps the environment and save you a lot of gas money! The University has added many bike lanes to ensure that Bike Safety is a priority on campus. During the harvest season the Community Market is open Saturday mornings from 9:00am-1:00pm, take a ride with a friend and enjoy the local farm fresh food and park your bike in the many bike.

Bring Your Own Bag

Take reusable bags to the grocery store with you instead of opting for paper or plastic. It’s wasteful and unnecessary, several bags every time you grocery shop will add up to a lot of garbage over time.

Bring Your Own Bottle

The We Mean Green Fund has purchased and custom designed a sustainable reusable body that is free to all students! To get a free reusable water bottle contact your Eco Rep to receive one. According to The Water Project, it’s estimated that up to 80 percent of plastic water bottles in the United States never get recycled. Using your own reusable bottle shows the Earth and your wallet love.

Recycle

Recycling bins are easily accessible all across campus. With such accessibility it is easy and important to save some waste from the landfill if you can. The EPA estimates that 75% of the American waste stream is recyclable, but we only recycle about 30% of it. Create habits that make you consciously think before you throw away an item.

Unplug

Whether you live on campus or off campus and when you’re not using appliances or not in your room, turn off the lights and unplug electronics. An easy way to apply this is by connecting to a surge protector and flipping the switch when you leave the room to power down multiple electronics to reduce energy consumption and lower your electric bill!

Buy Less or Borrow

Only buy what you actually need. If you have the option, friends or roommates, borrow items instead of buying them. Needing a clothing article? Borrow or buy second hand! The city of Denton is filled with many Thrift stores including Ruth’s Resale which is run by volunteers and completely benefits Habitat for Humanity of Denton County. Saves you money in the end and helps the environment by not participating in overconsumption.

Reduce your water usage

You can do this in your daily life by turning off water while brushing your teeth, washing your face or shaving. Time your showers and try to actively reduce your time to save water this makes a bigger impact than you would typically think!

Decrease meat consumption

Raising livestock produces nearly 1/5 of all greenhouse gases into the environment. Nearly 80% of land deforested in the Amazon is used as cattle pasture. Eating less meat, even omitting it from a meal one day a week can positively influence change. Mean Green’s is an all Vegan dining hall on campus just behind Maple Hall with fresh ingredients and creative options. Take a friend along with you and try something new! A Vegan diet saves 50% more carbon emissions than driving a Prius. The community of Denton is Vegan friendly with several options for dining out as well as Vegan Pot Luck events!
