VP Message - Let’s Stand Together in this Difficult Time

January 21, 2020

Dear DSA team,

Many of you have heard that one of our students was killed early this morning in an altercation with Denton Police. As President Smatresk said in his message, we are not releasing the student’s name at this time per request of the Denton Police Department and the Texas Rangers, pending family notification. A statement from the Denton Police Department can be read here.

I feel profound sadness at the loss of this member of our Mean Green family.

Many of our students and staff will feel the effects of this loss in the days ahead.

Counseling will be available for students and staff tomorrow from 10 a.m. to noon and from 3 to 5 p.m. at Chestnut Hall, Room 311. Buddy, a therapy poodle with Counseling and Testing Services also will be available.

Additionally, faculty and staff can take advantage of our Employee Assistance Program by calling 800-343-3822.

Many of our staff will be on the front lines interacting with students as they try to process this loss. I would ask that supervisors give their staff the time to process their own feelings and when possible be a listening ear. Please know that I am here too.

Let us stand beside our students and each other in this time of pain.

Take care of yourselves and each other.

Elizabeth With Ed.D.

Vice President for Student Affairs
