03/26/2024 01:54:04 PMBetter TogetherCenter for Leadership DevelopmentDivision of Student AffairsShow Your FireWe CarearticleDuring spring break at University of North Texas (March 9 – 15), the Center for Leadership and Service sent out two teams on an Alternative Spring Break experience to Memphis, Tenn., and the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. Working with Memphis community partners like Alpha Omega Veterans Services, The Works Inc., Memphis Native Tree Works, Mid-South Food Bank, and NAMI Memphis, CLS students painted damaged walls, planted trees, and sorted over 2,000 pounds of items, serving more than 150 families across multiple counties. Working with DFW partners, including Taste Project and the Bridge Homeless Recovery Center, CLS students also prepared over 145 pounds of food, served 200 individuals with food insecurity, distributed over 130 bags of detergent, and folded 500 towels for individuals with housing insecurity. Alternative Breaks is a student-led program advised by the Center for Leadership and Service. It is a unique learning experience where students can engage in service in social issues aligned to their passions or interests, while being immersed in community and culture. Most importantly, Alternative Breaks is an opportunity to be a catalyst for change. Students carry with them not only memories of the impact they make but also the inspiration to continue making a difference in the lives of others.
