Meagan Leftwich, a resident assistant in UNT Housing, was recognized by UNT Police Chief Ed Reynolds, for her life-saving actions during an incident in August involving a non-student in crisis.

Reynolds said the Leftwich made several key decisions on Aug. 27 when she encountered an individual in crisis at Collge Inn that made a huge difference including immediately calling 911 and administering aid until the paramedics arrived.

"Your actions resulted in the saving of  a life," Reynolds said during a ceremony to honor Leftwich Oct. 28. "In this day and age you don't always see people step up and do the right thing, so that is one of the things that makes this so special."

Gina Vanacore, executive director of Housing and Residence Life, said staff are given various trainings for different scenarios they might encounter on the job.

"It takes a special kind of person to be able to responed and utilize the training we give, but it also takes fortitude, foresight, maturity and the goodness of spiriit to be able to really step up and take a chance to help someone.," she said.
