Former UNT Associate Dean of Students Rodney Mitchell, who passed away in February, was named a Hometown Hero by the Modern Woodmen of America. Modern Woodmen of America is a member-owned fraternal financial services organization that provides financial guidance and social, educational and volunteer activities.

Hometown Hero Award - Rodney Mitchell“The Hometown Heroes award honors those who make a difference in the lives of others, and that is exactly what Rodney did through his work, church and service to others,” said Meredith Smith, financial representative for Modern Woodmen of America.

Mitchell’s wife, Melanie, faculty and staff development coordinator for the UNT Career Connect, Vice President for Student Affairs Elizabeth With, Dean of Students and Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs Maureen “Moe” McGuinness and members of the Dean of Students Office and the Division of Student Affairs accepted the award.

In addition, Modern Woodmen of America is donating $100 to the UNT Food Pantry in Mitchell’s name. Mitchell was instrumental in the creation and growth of the Food Pantry, which assists more than 1,200 students each year and stands as a testament to his amazing UNT legacy.
