First Flight Faculty and Staff Guide

First Flight is UNT's official welcome week program. First Flight is a mandatory 8-day extended orientation program and all new FTIC students are required to participate. Students will have a combination of specific scheduled sessions to attend and First Flight programs throughout the week where they will have the flexibility to create their own schedule and attend programs they are interested in. This week is designed to help new students begin their college experience on the right foot. Every year we rely on the service of our amazing faculty and staff to make this program a success. Here is how faculty and staff can get involved with First Flight.

First Flight Programs

First Flight programs are hosted by various departments on campus. Students will select at least 8 programs from the following 5 program categories to attend throughout the week.

  • My Prep - Make sure students are academically prepared for the start of classes
  • My Life - Help students determine how they are going to be engaged on campus
  • My Health and Wellness - Help students develop healthy habits in college
  • My Future - Help students chart a path during college to help them achieve their future career and life goals
  • Our Community - Help students learn what it means to be a part of our caring, inclusive community

University 101 Facilitator

As a component of First Flight Week, all new freshmen will be required to participate in a University 101 session with their small group. University 101 follows the Succeed at UNT Campaign ( and gives students the tools and information they need to be successful at UNT. We need 100-180 faculty and staff volunteers. Although we know we will have around 180 First Flight groups, we are hoping some volunteers can present more than once.

Please complete the form below to sign up to be a University 101 facilitator. Training dates will be emailed to volunteers. All new volunteers are required to participate in a training session prior to their first session. There will be multiple in-person opportunities for training and an online training option.

Special Interest Session

Special Interest Sessions are designed to give students an opportunity to meet a UNT faculty member, learn something “cool,” and get a sense of what a large classroom lecture experience will be like. Students are required to attend at least one Special Interest Session as a part of their First Flight Requirements. Our hope is to have representation from all of the UNT Colleges and Schools so students have an opportunity to connect with faculty members in their program. If you are interested in hosting a Special Interest Session during First Flight Week please complete the form below.
