First Flight Leaders

What is a First Flight Leader (FFL)? 

First Flight Leaders are mentors or guides to new freshman during First Flight Week. All FFL’s will be expected to facilitate small group meetings with a group of 15-20 new students, encourage participation in campus events during First Flight, and serve as a positive role model of a successful student at UNT. 

Join The First Flight Leader Team! 

Join the First Flight Leader team! First Flight Leaders must maintain good disciplinary standing with the University of North Texas, be enrolled as an undergrad student, and maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA. To apply follow these steps. 

  1. Students must complete an online application through the Career Center.  Log on to https://unt.joinhandshake.com/ and search for job posting 1398456 for the First Flight Leader position and/or 1398479 for the Transfer Experience First Flight Leader position.
  2. Students need to complete the First Flight Leader Application Packet (pdf).  Completed application packets must be submitted no later than 5:00 PM, April 16, 2018.  All forms are to be returned to the office of Orientation and Transition Programs, University Union, Suite 377.  
  3. Students should sign up for an interview time when returning their application to the Orientation and Transition Programs office.

Mandatory Training 

First Flight Leaders are expected to attend a mandatory training session.

Time Commitment 

First Flight Leaders should plan to spend First Flight Week on campus. Below are the scheduled times First Flight Leaders will lead their group of new students. Please note this schedule is subject to change. 

Sunday, August 19 4:00pm - 8:00pm
Monday, August 20 8:00am - 12:00pm
Tuesday, August 21 8:00am - 12:00pm
Wednesday, August 22 8:00am - 12:00pm
Thursday, August 23 8:00am - 5:00pm
Friday, August 24 11:00am-1:00pm

Frequently Asked Questions 

When are First Flight Leader interviews?

Group Interviews will be held April 19 - April 20, 2018. Individual Interviews will be held April 24 - April 27, 2018. 

When is First Flight Leader training?

Training will take place on Saturday, August 18, 2018. Plan to arrive on campus for the fall semester prior to that Saturday.

Do I need to attend all programs during First Flight Week?

We are asking that First Flight Leaders are available Sunday, August 19 - Friday, August 24, 2018. The FFL team will have responsibilities throughout First Flight Week so we ask that you keep those dates available.

Is the First Flight Leader a paid position?

Yes, we anticipate hiring approximately 25 leaders to lead our commuter student groups. First Flight Leaders earn $7.25/hour
