What is an Orientation Leader?
Orientation Leaders are students who are selected to assist with the new student and family transition to UNT. Tasks range from leading small group meetings, to providing technical assistance on the myUNT website to comforting a student who feels homesick or providing assistance during orientation programs to answering general questions about UNT for incoming freshman and transfer students. Members of the Orientation Team must be flexible, perceptive, willing to take initiative, empathetic, and team-orientated. The Orientation Leader team goes through intensive training during the spring and summer. This unique leadership experience hires students to serve as Orientation Leaders working with new students.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
What if I have class during Spring Training times/dates?
This year, the orientation leader spring training will be a class! You are expected to sign up for the class regardless if you are getting credit or not. We will only consider alternate options if you have a major specific class that is only offered during that time.
-
What if I don’t have any previous work experience? Will I still be considered?
Absolutely. This is a leadership role on campus. We have hired students with no work experience, and those with a lot. We take many factors into consideration while hiring our team.
-
Do Orientation Leaders get paid?
Yes! Orientation Leaders get a stipend that is paid in July, August, September.
-
Can Orientation Leaders take classes during the summer?
We typically advise against orientation leaders taking classes over the summer, as the OL role is very time consuming. There are a lot of long days and evenings and it can be difficult to balance. If you absolutely need to take a class, please speak with your supervisor and we can discuss this on an individual basis.
-
What if I can’t meet all the time commitments?
Please indicate on the application, any time conflicts you will have throughout the summer. It is imperative that we have adequate staffing for each orientation session. We can work with you on some dates, but the required dates are when we need all hands-on deck. This can be discussed further with a supervisor, if there are extenuating circumstances.
-
Do Orientation Leaders get any time off in the summer?
There is about a week off, around the 4th of July. Additionally, there are a few random days off throughout the summer.
-
What happens if I get offered a position but don’t meet the minimum GPA requirement after the spring semester?
We do check GPAs at the end of the spring semester to ensure that all orientation leaders meet the required GPA.
-
Where do Orientation Leaders live during the summer?
Orientation Leaders live in an on-campus residence hall. The exact hall depends upon camps and programs happening in addition to orientation, throughout the summer.
