Scrappy Auditions

To be considered to be Scrappy, you must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • You must be 5ft 9in or taller to audition
  • Must be able to sustain long periods of physical activity
  • Be a current UNT student or be accepted to UNT for the 2023-2024 school year
  • Be in good academic standing  and disciplinary standing with UNT
  • Have a minimum cumulative UNT GPA of 2.25 or higher
  • Be able to commit to about 3-5 hours per week, includes some nights and weekends to attend appearances requests for various events on and off-campus, attend UNT football and basketball games with the rest of the spirit squads (e.g., cheerleaders, dancers, and band), and attend mascot practice and meetings.  

Scrappy Audition Process

  • Fill out the audition application
  • You will be evaluated on the following:
    • Improv
    • Dance Ability
    • Game Day Simulation
    • Short Interview
  • After you fill out the application, you will be emailed more information about the audition process
  • Performers are not guaranteed a spot from year to year. Each performer will be evaluated yearly.

General Questions

What does Scrappy do?

When you are Scrappy, you are part of an elite group that will experience UNT like no other student. Mascots not only perform at sporting events, but also makes appearances at elementary schools, University events, alumni gatherings, orientation, and so much more! As Scrappy you get to promote Mean Green spirit and excitement on-campus!

How much time does being Scrappy take?

Great question! Being Scrappy takes more time than you think, but do not let that dissuade you because it is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have as a UNT student. Applicants should consider their class and work schedules, academic ability, and any other responsibilities on your plate. Listed below are some of the types of appearances that Scrappy makes throughout the year. Performers should be able to commit 5-10 hours per week.

Summer

  • Attend a 3-day mascot boot camp
  • Appearances at Orientation sessions throughout the summer 
  • Attend summer camp and practices for a week in mid-July (if selected to attend)
  • Return up to a week before school starts to practice and participate in First Flight events

Fall

  • Practice and conditioning 
  • Attend and perform at football, basketball, and volleyball games 
  • Appearances at various UNT and Denton community events 

Spring

  • Attend and perform at basketball games 
  • Appearances at various UNT and Denton community events 
  • Practice with North Texas Cheer for Daytona Nationals (if selected)
  • Practice and prepare a skit for a national mascot competition in Daytona, Florida (if selected)

How much does it cost to be Scrappy?

There is no cost to you if you are selected to be Scrappy. All travel expenses, mascot props, uniforms, and any other expenses are provided to you at no cost.

Who can try out to be Scrappy?

To try out to be Scrappy, you have to be accepted to UNT or be a current UNT student. You must also have and maintain a 2.25 UNT cumulative GPA.

Are there scholarships available?

Yes, there are scholarships available. Your first and second year as Scrappy, you will receive $250 a semester (Fall/Spring). Your thrid year and beyond as Scrappy you will receive $500 per semester (Fall/Spring).
