Hello! We are proud to announce our presidential campaign as Ryan Keller for SGA President and Sophia Vomvoris for SGA Vice-President. We are running because we believe that our campus can be uplifted and elevated to be a school that does more for you. This is the basis of our campaign, “for youâ€, because it is the students here that are why and who the university administration and student organizations coincide with one another for. We, as students, come to school to receive a higher level of education and expect the best opportunities available to be provided so that we are one day able to soar (as an eagle does). It is YOU that is in control of how our university is shaped and our candidacy intends to make these acts of change a reality. By voting for us, you will see significant changes made that prioritize the students and their personal day-to-day experiences on campus.
One of the first changes being in continuing to honor our mean “green†pride by pursuing better practices and more eco-friendly alternatives around campus. Our university works hard to create sustainable and impactful opportunities on campus, but we would like to take this a step further by creating a donation program during moving seasons and an e-waste recycling drive. When the time comes for students to move out of their residence halls, many students throw aways items such as food, clothes, and even furniture. These items can be collected and sent to those in need. By donating unwanted items and non-perishable foods, we can create a university sponsored program that gives back to the community we so love. An e-waste recycling drive is another program that allows for the university and students to get rid of broken or outdated electronics that can be recycled or outdated electronics.
We also intend to make a progressive change with UNT transportation by setting up better availability and options for the students who commute to and from campus. We know your voice matters so we will be setting up regularly scheduled meetings with the UNT transportation director to voice our grievances and look for ways to make your commute easier. Additionally, we would like to work alongside administration and students to tackle salient issues such as mental health and sexual assault by breaking the stigma around the topic and offering more information availability at orientations and around campus throughout the semester. It is important that students have the resources to learn more about mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, how to identify the behaviors and signs, and the campus resources available to utilize. There are so many services offered on campus that are underutilized and we want to ensure that the students know there are safe places on campus and people who are here to listen.
Finally, it is through student involvement that the Student Government Association is able to connect and prioritize the issues YOU face on campus. When elected, we promise to continue engaging with you to effectively mobilize our organization to better connect and represent our campus. Our university is a community with a unique and diverse culture, and we promise to embrace the values of the students and continue making progress through the voice of the people.
