What is Body Image?

Body image is how you view your body, when you’re looking at yourself in pictures or in the mirror as well as when you’re picturing yourself in your mind.  Body image includes not just your physical appearance, but also what you believe about your body, how you feel about your body, and how you feel in your body.

People can develop body image that may not be accurate, in which they do not see themselves as other people see them or see their body as it really looks. Sometimes, people may hold double-standards for themselves and others, and believe that they are not as good or attractive as other people, and feel that their body defines their self-worth and success. If this is the case, you can experience a great amount of anxiety, shame, and sadness that might impact school, relationships, and overall well-being. Negative body image can lead to eating disorders.

Positive body image, on the other hand, is when you appreciate and celebrate your body. You can see your body accurately, and feel “at home” in your body. You feel confident about your body, and do not spend a significant amount of time focusing on trying to alter it. You know that more than just your body defines you, and appreciate yourself overall.
