Tomás Sanchez

Department: Director for Residence Life, Housing and Residence Life

Bio: Dr. Tomás Sanchez has over 15 years of experience in student affairs and has been at UNT since 2016. He previously worked at the University of Vermont serving in various roles in Residential Life. In 2015 he completed his Ed. D. in Leadership and Policy Studies, focusing on the ethnoracial identity development of Mexican-American, college students born in Texas i.e. Tejanos. Tomás has served as a co-chair for the Division of Student Affairs Diversity Council since 2018 and was a recipient of the 2018 UNT Staff Diversity Award and the 2017 SWACUHO Diversity Award. He completed his M. Ed. in Counseling and Guidance and B.A. in Political Science at Texas State University.

What does your role entail/what do you do: "I usually describe my job as helping to manage the emotions and feelings that come out of living and working in the residence hall. The residence halls are the main gateway to a positive first-year experience. My continuing goal is to figure out how we provide that positive experience to our students and how to we professionally develop our staff at all levels to meet that goal."

What is your favorite part about working at UNT: "I am constantly amazed at the dedication from a variety of staff to ensuring the success of our students. I see it at all levels from a place of genuine caring and authenticity."

How have UNT students impacted your life: "UNT students are some of the most adaptable and kind people I have generally had the pleasure to work with. The graduate students in my department always challenge positively my growth and understanding of the field of student affairs. Our undergraduate staff, especially the RAs, are innovative and always willing to engage in difficult topics and conversations."

Fun fact about you: "I've been collecting superhero and pop culture action figures since college and have several hundred in my current collection."
