Title & Department: Administrative Specialist for Counseling and Testing Services
"As an administrative specialist, I act as the front desk for our office. I assist students with scheduling, via in-person, phone calls or emails, and answer any questions they might have regarding our services. I manage our counselor’s schedules and assist our staff and interns/trainees with anything they might need like, catering orders, planning staff wellness events, restocking, organizing and ordering materials, and preparing outreach carts-- just to name a few."
How do you work with students? --- "My main job is to assist students with scheduling counseling sessions and answering questions. Whether they come in-person, call our office, or email us, I am there to help with anything they might need. I am their first point of contact when wanting to schedule a counseling appointment, so I need to be prepared for anything ranging from redirecting them to other departments or scheduling them for an immediate crisis appointment."
How does your department work with students? --- "My department offers counseling sessions to all enrolled students. We also provide group therapy and workshops covering a variety of topics like art, music, grief, international, and LGBTQIA+ groups among other topics."
What is your favorite part about working at UNT? --- "I really enjoy being on campus again. I was in my undergrad education when COVID hit us hard, so a lot of my college experience was lost, however, I am getting it back by working full-time on campus and being a full-time graduate student here at UNT. I also appreciate the benefits I receive from working at UNT."
What does Student Affairs mean to you? --- "Student Affairs means providing a true college experience for students. Being a student twice at UNT, I believe Student Affairs means to provide opportunities for students to make this point of our lives smoother and enjoyable by offering opportunities for improved health and wellness, social events, counseling sessions, help with accessibility, recreational activities, etc."
How have UNT students impacted your life? --- "By working with and being a student, interacting with my fellow students allows me to learn and grow alongside them. I lost a lot of opportunities to socialize and learn from others during my undergrad and I find working at UNT now fulfilling that loss. I am studying to become a counselor and working in a counseling office offers me first-hand experience into what my future could be like and what it might contain. Working with students makes me feel like I am making a difference in their lives even before I’m a full-blown counselor."
Fun fact about you? --- "One fun fact about myself would be that before I worked here at UNT, I worked at a pharmacy as a Licensed Pharmacy Technician, and I passed the National PTCB Exam on the first try."
