Bethany Evans, Clinical Director for the Counseling Department, has accepted the position of co-chair of the DSA Diversity Council.

"My thanks to Bethany for her willingness to take on this role especially at a time so fraught with pain, anger, and fatigue for Black people," said Elizabeth With, Vice President for Student Affairs.  "We have needed a Black voice in a leadership position on the council."

Bethany joins Tomas Sanchez, Associate Director for Residence Life and Melissa McGuire, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, the current co-chairs in leading the 12-member council.

"I am so appreciative of the opportunity to join the DSA Diversity Council as co-chair," says Evans. "I look forward to working with the team to further advocate for and implement diversity and inclusion initiatives within the division and the university. I hope to be able to provide a new perspective and continue to work to identify areas of growth within our campus community.

This DSA Diversity Council provides advocacy, feedback, and action to increase support and resources for diversity and inclusion in DSA.

The appointment comes in the wake of the murder of George Floyd and the continued horrific acts of racial violence across the country. Protests in Denton and around the world have called on leaders to put an end to the ongoing inequality Black people face in our society.

"I want to be clear that this is but one of many steps we need to take to ensure that our Black students, staff, and faculty can thrive in a safe, inclusive, caring environment," says Dr. With.
