Community Partner Highlight: Denton Rehabilitation and Nursing Center
This week, we're talking to our wonderful partners at the Denton Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Read more to learn about them and how they help the geriatric population in Denton!
- Your name and title?
Brenda Elliott—Activities Director and Libby R. Dorn—Social Worker
- What is your organization and what does it do?
Denton Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. We get the privilege of serving the geriatric population that require short term skilled nursing/therapy and long term care.
- What is your organization’s mission?
We seek to enable our residents to live as independently as possible, recognizing that the importance of freedom and dignity does not diminish with age.
- Why did you choose to work in this field?
We both have had the opportunity to work at Denton Rehabilitation for quite some time, Brenda has been with the company for over thirty years. I pale in comparison as I have only worked here since 2007! Love, passion, and a desire to make a difference everyday is what brought us to the field. We are extremely blessed to be doing what we are doing on any given day but especially during this pandemic.
- What led you to work with the Center for Leadership and Service?
Our organization was lucky enough to be contacted by the Center for Leadership and Service many years ago and from that point on it has been a great partnership. We are truly blessed to be able to work with such fantastic group.
- What is your favorite initiative that you have worked on so far?
This is a difficult and easy question to answer---before COVID, having all the students come in and participate in activities such as Bingo and other games, was a true highlight. The interactions, the smiles, the conversations were so significant. With COVID, the group has adapted and really made a difference with our residents in other ways. This has come in the form of emails and cards—beautifully written and decorated. The smiles are still being generated and the hearts still warmed---this has truly helped during these hard times!
- What would you say to students who want to get involved?
We would say---get involved and make some memories! There are so many ways to make a difference in someone’s day and it is a true blessing to be able to give to others. It is such a wonderful experience being able to give back to the community and especially to the geriatric population! Keep making a difference!
