After more than a decade, the Greek step show tradition has returned with an impressive display of talent and spirit from the University of North Texas fraternity and sorority community.

Last month, the UNT Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life hosted the North Texas Step Show, which featured routines choreographed and performed by members of the UNT fraternity and sorority community. Three chapters were represented at the event by competing teams—the Epsilon Mu chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the Eta Epsilon chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the Zeta Eta chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

“Step shows hold a special significance to National Pan-Hellenic Council fraternities and sororities,” said Ronald Atkinson, CFSL director. “They highlight the unique culture associated with the experience, and the practice of stepping that has been synonymous with the NPHC experience since the 1960’s.”

Step shows at UNT date back to the 1970s, starting with the Greek Explosion  hosted for several decades by UNT’s Delta Sigma Theta chapter. The last documented UNT step show was held in 2012. This year’s event marked the first step show to be hosted annually by UNT’s CFSL as a whole.

“A goal we have had for the community has been to provide an avenue to showcase this very spectacular artform for the campus community and their peers. We are happy to have had a hand in hosting CFSL’s inaugural step show and know this is just the beginning,” Atkinson said.

The North Texas Step Show featured performances from the three competing organizations. With a performance that gave homage to the 2000 movie Bring it On, the Epsilon Mu chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was crowned the winner and awarded a custom-made wooden North Texas Step Show champion paddle.
