James exemplifies what it means to serve beyond the uniform. His dedication ensures that our student veterans transition into civilian campus life equipped with the resources they need to succeed.

The University of North Texas (UNT) is proud to celebrate James Davenport, director of Student Veteran Services, for receiving the prestigious Patriot Award from the Texas Veterans Hall of Fame. This honor recognizes Davenport’s unwavering commitment to supporting student veterans and their families as they transition from military service to academic and professional success.

Davenport has dedicated his career to empowering those who served, drawing on more than 40 years of experience in military and veteran programs. His background includes over two decades of service in the U.S. Army, during which he was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in the Gulf War. Following his military service, he assumed several leadership roles in veteran employment initiatives and was inducted into the Texas Veterans Hall of Fame in 2020.

Since joining UNT 11 years ago, he has transformed Student Veteran Services into a nationally recognized program, offering resources such as academic advising, mentorship opportunities, mental health support, and career development tailored to veterans’ unique needs.

Under Davenport’s leadership, UNT has earned multiple Gold Veterans Education Excellence Recognition Awards (VEERA) from the Texas Veterans Commission, affirming the university’s commitment to providing exceptional educational assistance and support for veterans. Davenport’s vision has also led to initiatives like veteran-specific graduation ceremonies, partnerships with employers to ensure career readiness and veteran focused career fairs.

“James exemplifies what it means to serve beyond the uniform,” said Desiree Padron, director of the Eagle Engagement Center, which houses Student Veteran Services sits. “His dedication ensures that our student veterans transition into civilian campus life equipped with the resources they need to succeed.”

The Patriot Award is a testament to Davenport’s work and commitment as his efforts continue to make UNT a top destination for military-affiliated students seeking a place where their service is honored and their future is bright.

UNT’s Student Veteran Services, part of the Eagle Engagement Center within the Division of Student Affairs, supports more than 3,000 student veterans and their dependents. UNT’s Student Veteran Services has earned recognition as a Veteran Friendly Campus from Military Times, U.S. Veteran Magazine and GI Jobs. The Texas Veterans Commission has awarded UNT with the Gold VEERA for three consecutive years.
