UNT’s North Texas Cheerleaders (NTC), North Texas Dancers (NTD) and Scrappy all brought home wins at the National Cheer Association (NCA) and National Dance Association (NDA) college camp held July 21-23 at SMU.

UNT North Texas CheerleadersThe North Texas Cheerleaders attended classes at camp that included game day cheers, chants, stunts, pyramids and basket tosses. They also competed in the two major cheer competitions—The Game Day routine, which is a 45-second cheer and chant competition that focuses on crowd involvement, and The Rally Routine, which is a mini National’s routine that combines crowd involvement, technical skills, motions, tumbling, partner stunting and pyramids. NTC competed in the large D1A division against Oklahoma State, University of Houston, and the University of Texas at San Antonio. After advancing to the Game Day run off from this division, they competed against the entire camp to win the overall Champion of Game Day against over 22 colleges and universities!

UNT North Texas DanceThe North Texas Dancers attended classes on various dance styles and spirit raising techniques and learned routines that they were evaluated on throughout camp. NTD placed first in the D1A Team Performance Division, which also included SMU and UT. NTD had four members nominated for an All-American Individual Dancer Award, and two members, Captain Joslyn Love and rookie Sydney Reinacher, were chosen as a recipients from NTD. The All-American Individual Award is given to dancers who encompass leadership, performance, and technical skills. Dancers are nominated by the NDA staff instructors and must go through an audition process in front of the entire camp.

Scrappy also had an impressive showing and won Most Collegiate Mascot, which is given to the mascot that is overall the best performer while at camp. The award also comes with a bid to compete against other mascots in the mascot competition at Nationals. The last time Scrappy competed was in 2014, where he earned fifth place.

In addition, at camp teams compete for three types of bids given out for Nationals in Daytona Beach, Fla.: bronze, silver and gold. Most teams that meet all the criteria of attending all classes and competing in both Game Day and Rally routines receive a bronze paid bid, which is discounted registration. A silver paid bid is the same discounted registration and two free hotel rooms, and a gold paid bid is the same discounted registration and five free hotel rooms.

NTC received a gold paid bid to Nationals, NTD received a gold paid bid to Nationals and Scrappy received a bid to compete at Nationals.

“North Texas Cheer went to camp for a gold paid bid, and that’s just what we got,” said Bailey North, NTC captain. “We kept our eye on the prize and never lost focus on the goals that we set for ourselves. We pushed our limits and came into cheer camp prepared and knowing that this was our year, and sure enough we pulled it off.”

“I’m beyond proud of my team for working together, motivating each other, having consistent positive attitudes and working hard,” said Joslyn Love, NTD team captain. “We had a successful and fun time at camp bonding and showcasing who the North Texas Dancers are. We can all say the work was definitely worth it.”

Good luck to all at Nationals!
