The U.S. Department of Education has awarded the University of North Texas (UNT) a federal TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) grant totaling $2.1 million for the 2025-2030 program cycle.
The TRIO SSS program prepares students for academic and professional success through specialized services, including academic advising, financial aid and scholarship guidance, career exploration, graduate school preparation, and academic tutoring. This comprehensive support increases the likelihood that students will successfully complete their bachelor’s degree within four years.
In the most recent annual performance report (academic year 2023-2024), the UNT SSS program achieved 99% persistence rate, 96% good academic standing, and 78% bachelor’s degree attainment, exceeding federal grant objectives. Federal guidelines require SSS programs to meet performance standards for continued funding.
SSS is one of eight federal TRIO programs funded under the Higher Education Act of 1965 to help students navigate and overcome academic barriers to degree completion. Since its inception in 1968, SSS has helped millions of low-income, first-generation students graduate from college and contribute to their communities and the U.S economy.
To be eligible to participate in the UNT TRIO SSS program, students must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who meet one of the following eligibility requirements:
- First-generation - Defined as an individual both of whose parents/guardians did not complete a baccalaureate degree.
- Low-income - Defined by the U.S. Department of Education as a student’s family taxable income amount is equal to 150% of the poverty level as established by the U.S. Census Bureau.
- Documented disability - A documented (physical or learning) disability as defined by Section 504/ADA with verification from the UNT Office of Disability Access.
