University Union brings home top awards and recognition for outstanding leadership, design excellence and service.

The University of North Texas University Union made a strong showing at the ACUI Region II Conference, held Oct. 9-11 at Missouri State University.

The Association of College Unions International (ACUI) is a professional organization dedicated to advancing campus community through student unions and activities. Region II includes institutions from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Louisiana, providing opportunities for professional development, networking and recognition.

Several UNT staff members and student employees attended the event, presenting educational sessions and contributing to the conference planning team.

Award Highlights

Shelby Hornsby, student services coordinator at Discovery Park, received the Shirley Plakidas New Professional Award, which honors professionals in their first five years of service who have made significant contributions to ACUI Region II. The award, named for former ACUI President Shirley Plakidas, recognizes emerging leaders committed to advancing campus life.

The Union Design Works team earned multiple accolades for excellence in graphic design:

  • First Place, Brochure: McKenna Qualls – “25–26 Fine Arts Brochure”
  • First Place, Calendar: Design Works Team – “UPC Fall 2025 Calendar”
  • First Place, Poster: Mia Sanchez – “Monster Mash”
  • Second Place, Promotional Campaign: Aiden Savetman – “Union Fest 2025”

In addition, Sergio Renovato, Shelby Hornsby and Andrea Marquez received the Lanita Legan Service Award, which recognizes individuals who provide outstanding volunteer service to the regional conference. Named after longtime ACUI leader Lanita Legan, the award celebrates those who go above and beyond in supporting the event through planning, logistics and on-site assistance.

The Center for Student Affairs at Discovery Park is a hub of connection and engagement, offering students dynamic programs and links to main campus resources. Over the fall and spring semesters, the center hosted 82 events drawing nearly 11,000 participants and partnered with campus offices to co-sponsor 26 additional programs, reaching more than 3,700 attendees. 

University Union is part of the Division of Student Affairs. The  315,147 square-foot facility is designed to cater to the needs of the student population and UNT campus. In the past year, the University Union coordinated over 8,600 bookings and 1,161 tabling events, and averaged more than 26,000 visitors per day.
