For 10 years, the UNT Food Pantry presented by Kroger has been more than just a resource. It has been a lifeline for thousands of students facing food insecurity. Since opening its doors, the pantry has served over 28,000 individuals, ensuring that students have access to nutritious food so they can stay focused on their education and future.
Founded in 2015 as part of UNT’s commitment to student success and well-being, the pantry began as a small initiative and has since grown into a vital campus service. Just last year, over 4,500 students across 18,300 visits relied on the food pantry for assistance.
“Food insecurity shouldn’t stand in the way of a student’s ability to thrive,” says Tristen Wheeler, associate director of the Diamond Eagle Student Resource Center. “We are proud to have served so many students over the years and remain dedicated to providing support for years to come.”
The UNT Food Pantry has seen remarkable growth over the past decade. In addition to increasing the variety of food available, the pantry has launched educational initiatives focused on nutrition, meal planning, and financial literacy, to empower students with knowledge to make healthier, budget-friendly choices.
“I decided to use the food pantry after a friend recommended it to me,” explains a UNT student who wishes to remain anonymous. “I visit the pantry almost weekly, and it provides approximately 30% of my groceries. This regular access has been incredibly helpful in maintaining a stable food supply. By saving money on groceries, I've been able to redirect those funds toward my education and research.”
As the pantry looks toward the future, its mission remains the same: to provide accessible, stigma-free food assistance and advocate for long-term solutions to food insecurity.
To celebrate the 10-year anniversary, the UNT Food Pantry will be selling T-shirts and tote bags as a fundraising effort. Listen to the Happy Friday North Texas podcast to learn more about the anniversary.
