The Sustainable Arts Garden is a natural dye garden dedicated to building creative community and our collective connection to the land through sustainable art education and experimentation. Through public workdays, craft workshops, and a student volunteer program, the garden provides a space for UNT students and the greater Denton community to interact with plants as both a resource and inspiration for sustainable art.
Formerly the UNT Natural Dye Garden, this We Mean Green Fund project was founded in 2012 by UNT Fibers Program students and faculty. The garden served as a space to allow for experimental growing and utilization of natural dye resources. The project collaborated with various local artists and organizations, such as Make Art with Purpose, Denton County Master Gardeners Association, Denton Workbench, TX Petal Project, and the We Mean Green Fund's own Environmental Volunteerism Cord program!
In Fall of 2024, the project rebranded as the Sustainable Arts Garden in order to implement a broader focus on sustainability in craft beyond natural dyeing. The heart of the project remains the same, as it still centers on educating the community on natural resources while embracing creativity.
The garden hosts weekly workdays (nearly) every Friday from 10am-12pm. Workdays are open to all.
