Thanks to a group of wonderful volunteers and a partnership between the We Mean Green Fund, UNT Facilities, and the Center for Leadership and Service, two new fruit trees were planted in the UNT Community Garden last weekend! Last Saturday, October 26, 2019, was Make a Difference Day, a day dedicated to community service and volunteerism that is observed across the country. The new fig tree and pomegranate tree will be an excellent destination for pollinators like bees and birds; as a Bee Campus USA affiliate, UNT is committed to providing habitat for all pollinators through initiatives like Operation Trees for Bees.

As we approach Texas Arbor Day this November 1, we want you to think of ways you can get involved and make a difference! UNT Facilities will be leading their Second Annual Tree Tour Friday, November 1 at 9:00 am and then again at 10:30 am. This is a great opportunity to learn about the thirteen plus varieties of trees on campus; the diversity of trees on display across campus helped get UNT recognized as a Tree Campus USA university for the last 11 years!

The UNT Community Garden is currently seeking new plot members from the UNT community and has volunteer workdays scheduled throughout the semester! Apply on the garden website to become a regular garden member, sign up to get updates about future volunteer opportunities, and follow @growmeangreen on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. If you are interested in environmental volunteerism, the We Mean Green Fund offers the Environmental Volunteerism Graduation Cord to students who complete at least 75 hours of environmentally-focused volunteer work. The graduation cords are 100% natural cotton and hand-dyed by UNT students with natural dyes grown in the UNT Natural Dye Garden. Register online to let us know you are working towards earning the cord and start making a green change in your community!
