When last week’s winter storm finally passed, the University of North Texas campus was left blanketed not only with melting ice, but with scattered litter. While Facilities crews worked tirelessly to restore normal operations, another group quietly jumped into action – the brothers of Sigma Nu.

Small Effort, Big Impact

More than 35 Sigma Nu members grabbed trash bags and walked across campus collecting litter from sidewalks, green spaces, bus stops, and near the residence halls. Armed with gloves and grabbers, the group covered high‑traffic student areas cleaning up what others left behind.

“We wanted to help do something for the university that does so much for us,” said Landon Smith, president of the Sigma Nu Zeta Omicron Chapter.

Service as a Core Value

Community service has always been central to Sigma Nu’s identity, but this cleanup showed the spirit behind those values. No requirement, no event, no recognition, just students taking care of their campus because it matters to them.

“We do many community service events around and outside of campus,” Smith said. “It’s our goal to be leaders of men, building the habits of selflessness in a world of selfish people. Not only do I see this being a recurring event, but this is an event we have been doing for several years, and we plan on keeping that going for many years.”

Strengthening the UNT Community

In Student Affairs, we see moments like this as a reminder of what makes UNT special. Our students consistently look out for one another, step up in unexpected ways, and take pride in creating a welcoming, cared‑for campus.

As campus life returns to normal after the storm, the Sigma Nu brothers’ efforts left a visible impact and an even more meaningful one behind the scenes, a model of what community looks like when students lead with heart.
