UNT Student Legal Services Recognized for Outstanding Achievements
UNT Student Legal Services received the J. Raymond Schiflett, III Annual Award for Outstanding Office of the Year from the University Student Legal Services Association - Western Region (USLSA-WR) at its Continuing Legal Education Conference held January 2 - 5.
This annual award recognizes the achievements of individuals, organizations or programs committed to enriching their communities through outstanding educational training, advocacy initiatives, customer service and leadership roles. USLSA-WR is a non-profit professional association of legal service providers on campuses of higher education committed to providing outstanding legal educational opportunities and resources to its member schools.
“Being recognized by colleagues and peers is one of the highest professional honors one can achieve, said Keisha Ware, attorney and director of Student Legal Services. “In 2017, SLS expanded services to include immigration consultations to better serve our diverse student community, making UNT one of a few institutions nationwide to provide in-house immigration consultations to students. Our office was pleased to accept this award in honor of the students and student leaders that successfully advocated for the creation of a new attorney positon within SLS, which allowed for expanded services. I am blessed to work with an awesome staff, supportive administrators and a university community that embraces our diversity.”
Student Legal Services offers a wide variety of legal guidance, including counseling, advising and representing UNT students. The office handles cases involving auto accidents, consumer complaints, debt collection, discrimination, dispute resolution, domestic violence, injuries, landlord tenant issues, sexual harassment and unpaid wages, among many others.
