Transfer Tuesdays were created to give UNT's transfer students a go-to spot to meet their peers, hang out, and just have their own space.

Transferring to a new institution looks different for every student, often bringing the quiet challenge of navigating an unfamiliar community and unknown resources. However, this transition is not a journey that has to be taken alone. With over 3,000 transfer students enrolling annually at the University of North Texas, orientation serves as the first step, but the true connection begins once they are officially enrolled.

Support for Transfer Students Beyond Orientation

UNT’s Transfer Center hosts “Transfer Tuesdays” every week between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. For those eight hours, the transfer team is dedicated to ensuring that every student finds a place to make connections, proving that while individual paths may be unique, there is always a community

"Transfer Tuesdays were created to give transfer students a go-to spot to meet their peers, hang out, and just have their own space,” says Rebekah Gormley, student services coordinator for the Transfer Center. “Students are welcome to come in to play games, study by themselves, or chat with the other attendees. Knowing that everyone else in the room is new to campus, and a transfer student, gives participants an instant connection – and an easy conversation starter.”

A Weekly Connection that Builds Community

Working closely with Gormley to facilitate these connections are Transfer Ambassadors, who act as direct links between the program’s goals and the student experience. By establishing a secure and welcoming environment, each ambassador serves as a peer-to-peer resource, providing one-on-one mentorship to help students find their footing during their first semester and throughout the college journey.

“I have seen a lot of folks make Transfer Tuesday a part of their weekly routine and build relationships with both the Transfer Ambassadors and their peers,” Rebekah explains.

Freddie S., a transfer ambassador, considers Transfer Tuesdays to be one of his favorites, and most rewarding events. “Seeing students meet for the first time at Transfer Tuesdays and form closer relationships over the course of the semester is incredible,” he says.

A Bridge to Campus Life

Beyond weekly gatherings, the Transfer Center serves as a dedicated bridge to the broader UNT community. Through consistent resource sharing and intentional programming, these initiatives create opportunities for transfer students to feel connected and engaged. It’s an added layer of support to remove barriers and encourage student success.

UNT’s Transfer Center provides comprehensive support for transfer students, from pre-transfer exploration through successful degree completion. As part of the Division of Student Affairs and a program within Orientation and Transition Programs, the Transfer Center offers guidance, resources, and collaborative initiatives designed to promote a smooth transition and meaningful engagement in the UNT community.
