As the nation observes National Food Bank Day, the University of North Texas is celebrating a milestone in its fight against food insecurity. The UNT Food Pantry by Kroger has served over 4,000 students across more than 20,000 visits in the past year, underscoring its role in supporting student well-being.
The pantry was launched as part of a broader effort to ensure that no student must choose between their education and their next meal.
“Food insecurity is a real barrier to student success,” says Dr. Laura Smith, Dean of Students. “The pantry is more than a resource. It’s a statement that our community cares and that help is always available.”
Located in Crumley Hall, the pantry offers shelf-stable goods, fresh produce, and hygiene products. It operates year-round and is open to all currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students.
A partnership with Kroger has been instrumental in sustaining the pantry’s operations. Through regular donations and logistical support, the grocery chain has helped UNT maintain a steady supply of food and expand its outreach.
National Food Bank Day, observed annually on the first Friday of September, honors the work of food banks and encourages communities to support hunger relief efforts. At UNT, the day serves as a reminder of the ongoing need and the power of collective action.
“Every visit to the pantry is a step toward academic success,” Smith adds. “We’re proud of the impact we’ve made, and we’re committed to growing that impact in the years ahead.”
