First Flight is UNT's official welcome week program. This week is designed to help new students begin their college experience on the right foot. From programs that prepare you for the upcoming educational opportunities to programs where you get to let loose and meet fellow peers, there is something for everyone!
All new freshmen students are required to participate in First Flight Week. All freshmen will be assigned a First Flight Leader and will participate in small group meetings, a career readiness session, and have the opportunity to attend programs throughout the week.
Visit the First Flight Week schedule page for a schedule at a glance for the week. The full schedule for First Flight Week will be published the week before the event.
Attendance will be taken at all required activities and small group meetings. Students are asked to check in when attending programs throughout the week. If you are unable to check in to a specifice program, please report that using the form below:
Students will have 3 small group meetings during First Flight Week to help you build connections, learn about campus, what it takes to be a successful student here at UNT, and reflect on your experiences throughout the week. The first small group meeting for students living on campus is their Wing Meeting led by their RA. Small groups are made up of students living on the same wing in each residence hall. Commuter students are paired in groups with other commuters to help build connections.
During this session, students will learn about the opportunities available to them to engage in Career Exploration throughout their first year at UNT. Students will also learn about next steps in the career exploration process and how they can further their career growth during your first year at UNT.
During the Our Community presentation, students will learn about the UNT System Values. In addition, students will discuss the UNT Wellness Wheel and how they can make wellness a priority.
To complete Scrappy's challenge students will work together as a team with their First Flight group to answer trivia questions, find locations on campus, and complete various challenges. It's a fun, interactive way for students to learn more about UNT, and get to know their First Flight group. First Flight groups will compete to earn prizes for their team.
Feeling a connection to your college or school is critical to your success. On college day students will get to know academic leaders and some the key resources from your college.
New student convocation serves as the official academic kick-off to the upcoming year. This event will include all the president's cabinet members, deans and other faculty and staff. It will culminate with the official pinning of new students with an eagle lapel pin to be worn at graduation.
First Flight Programs are where students get to make First Flight Week their own! Students are asked to attend programs and events that interest them. We ask that all students attend at least 5 programs throughout the week and encourage students to find one in each category:
My Prep | Being prepared for college level work is your first step to a successful year. What you may need in terms of preparation will vary by student. |
My Life | On a campus UNT's size, opportunities to engage in campus life are abundant. Take time this week to connect with your peers, figure out ways to be involved on campus, and immerse yourself in the spirit and traditions. |
My Future | Although a graduation is still 4 years away, the actions you make today will impact your future. |
My Health and Wellness | Cultivating a lifestyle that embraces ideas of health and wellness are keys to your happiness and success in college. |
Our Community | Learn what it means to be a part of our caring community and how to prioritize your wellness. |
First Flight Leaders are mentors or guides to new freshman during First Flight Week. For students living on campus, their First Flight Leader is their Resident Assistant (RA). All FFL's will be expected to facilitate small group meetings with their students, encourage participation in programs during First Flight, and serve as a positive role model of a successful student at UNT.
Commuter students are paired with a commuter leader, one of our ACCESS peer mentors, to guide them through the week of activities and facilitate campus community building.
