New Student Organization Process

The new student organization process is designed to help dissolved* organizations and forming groups build organizations that are sustainable, mission-driven, and uniquely contribute to campus life. Before new or dissolved organization advance to the official registration stage,  organization hopefuls must complete the following steps:

Step 1: Submit the New Student Organization Request

Students must submit the New Student Organization Request (form available August 31st, 2026). The request should clearly outline the proposed organization’s purpose, intended membership base, and preliminary leadership structure.

Submit your request for 2026-2027 consideration here. The deadline to submit a New Student Org Request for 2026-2027 is April 4th, 2027, at 11:59pm.

Step 2: Meet with Student Activities Staff

After the request is submitted, the indicated primary contact will receive an email within 5-10 business days to schedule a required interview with Student Activities staff to discuss the organization’s structural and operational plans.

This interview is an important part of the review process and is intended to:

• Ensure the organization aligns with  Student Organization Policy
• Evaluate whether the organization demonstrates long-term sustainability and purpose
• Assess how the organization would contribute to campus engagement 
• Determine whether the organization’s mission is distinct from established, currently active UNT organizations 

Important Note About the Interview Process

The new student organization interview is the primary factor staff reference in determining whether an organization will advance to the official registration stage. Students are encouraged to approach the meeting thoughtfully and with preparation, as the strength and clarity of the organization’s vision significantly impacts the review outcome.

During the meeting, students should be prepared to clearly articulate:

• The organization’s mission and goals
• Why the organization is needed on campus
• How the organization differs from existing student organizations
• Proposed leadership structure and operational plans
• Intended programs, events, or member experiences
• Recruitment and sustainability strategies

Step 3: Student Activities Review

Please note, completing the new org request and interview steps does not guarantee the organization will be approved to register.

Following the interview, Student Activities staff will determine whether the proposed organization meets the criteria to advance to the formal registration stage. The org representative with be notified of their application status.  Approved organizations will be eligible to register for the 2026-2027 academic year. 

Step 4: Submit Student Organization Registration Application

If your new student org request is approved, your organization's representative will receive an email containing detailed steps toward the successful submission of the official Student Org Registration application. The organization's advisor will be required to complete additional information and/or training if they are not on record with Student Activities as having served as a student organization advisor at UNT before. Their completion is required prior to the Student Org Application being approved. Once a new student org reaches student org registation approval, it is eligible for the privileges of registration. 

Preparing for the New Student Org Request Process

If you're interested in starting a new organization or bringing back a dissolved organization you will need:

• At least 8 currently enrolled UNT student members (must have names and EUIDs). Exceptions to membership numbers may exist for organizations based out of UNT Frisco, advised by the Fraternity and Sorority Life, or affiliated with a national governing body. Please review the Student Organization Policy for more information on exceptions.
• A mission/purpose statement that is unique from current student organizations.
• Create your organization’s constitution, with required clauses verbatim. Use the Sample Constitution (which indicates the required clauses in red text) and Constitution Checklist as a guide.
• At least 2 officers (which may be part of the 8 members), including a President/Primary Officer.
• An organization advisor (name, email, and department) who is a full-time UNT faculty or staff member, is older than 21 years of age, and not pursuing an undergraduate degree at UNT.

Processing Timeline

The full approval process will take at least 3 weeks, possibly longer depending on Student Activities’ workload and the forming student organization contact’s response rate.

While You Wait

Student Activities is committed to helping prospective groups gain momentum while navigating the New Student Organization Process.  Eligible groups may receive limited interim privileges* designed to support recruitment, interest-building, and organizational development before formal registration.

To be eligible for interim privileges, a group must:

1. Have a New Student Organization Request on file
2. Participate in required consultations, training, or meetings as determined by Student Activities including New Org Bootcamp offered once per long semester
3. Remain in good standing throughout the New Student Organization Process
4. Comply with all applicable university policies, procedures, and directives

Eligible groups  may receive the following interim privileges:

• Establish a social media presence (Groups not approved to advance to registration must immediately discontinue its use)
• Participate in select Student Activities recruitment and tabling events (space permitting)
• Receive guidance from Student Activities staff on organization development, recruitment, governance, and operations
• Attend leadership development opportunities
• Promote recruitment efforts through approved Student Activities and University communication channels
• Access organizational templates, resources, and registration preparation materials
• Receive support in developing governing documents and completing registration requirements

New Org Boot Camp

New Organization Boot Camp is an interactive learning experience designed to help emerging student organizations build a strong foundation for long-term success at UNT. This experience equips organization leaders with the knowledge, tools, and strategies needed to effectively launch, operate, and sustain a thriving student organization community.
