The University of North Texas Student Government Association (SGA), much like the U.S. government, is structured into three main branches: the Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch, and the Judicial Branch. Each branch has distinct responsibilities but works collaboratively to advocate for and represent the undergraduate student body at UNT.
Together, these three branches function as a system of checks and balances, ensuring that SGA remains transparent, effective, and student-centered in its mission to serve the UNT community. Learn about our three branches below!
The Executive Branch of the 2024-2025 Dozier & Watkins Administration is comprised of 10 executive board members: Student Government Association President, Student Government Association Vice President, Chief of Staff, Director of Leadership & Development, Director of Advocacy, Director of Campus Life, Raupe Travel Grant, Eagle's Nest, Director of Marketing & Communications, and Deputy Director of Marketing & Communications Director. The Executive Board is a paid position chosen by the President & Vice-President. Each position has its own roles & duties to fulfill as outline by either the Constitution, By-Laws, or Executive Policy Manual. The Executive Board works as the spearhead of SGA with each individual part working with students, student organizations, and administration to fulfill the common goal of making our campus a better place ensuring student concerns and opinions are advocated for properly.
The Judicial Branch of the University of North Texas Student Government Association (SGA) ensures fairness, accountability, and adherence to the SGA Constitution and Bylaws. It is composed of the Chief Justice and a panel of Associate Justices, who oversee cases related to SGA elections, constitutional disputes, and internal grievances. The Judicial Branch serves as the final authority on interpreting SGA governing documents and resolving conflicts within student government. Justices review complaints, hear appeals, and issue rulings that uphold the integrity of the organization. They also provide guidance to SGA members on constitutional matters and help maintain transparency in student governance. By safeguarding due process and ensuring all actions align with SGA rules, the Judicial Branch plays a vital role in maintaining a fair and effective student government at UNT.
The Legislative Branch of the Student Government Association (SGA) is embodied by the Student Senate, which holds the authority to enact legislation, allocate funds, and represent the undergraduate student body. Composed of elected senators from each school, college, or academy, as well as at-large representatives, the Senate ensures fair representation for all students. The Vice President of the Student Body serves as the Speaker of the Senate, presiding over meetings, facilitating discussions, and ensuring that legislative processes are carried out effectively. The Senate meets regularly to discuss student concerns, approve expenditures, confirm appointments, and oversee the operations of SGA. Governed by Robert’s Rules of Order and subject to Texas Open Meetings Laws, the Student Senate plays a critical role in shaping policies that impact student life and university governance.
