The University of North Texas Student Government Association (SGA), much like the U.S. government, is structured into three main branches: the Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch, and the Judicial Branch. Each branch has distinct responsibilities but works collaboratively to advocate for and represent the undergraduate student body at UNT.

  • The Executive Branch, led by the SGA President and Vice President, oversees the daily operations of SGA, implements initiatives, and serves as the primary liaison between students and university administration.
  • The Legislative Branch, known as the Student Senate, consists of elected student representatives from each academic college. It is responsible for passing legislation, approving funding requests, and addressing student concerns through resolutions and policy recommendations.
  • The Judicial Branch, composed of the Chief Justice and Associate Justices, ensures that SGA operates within its governing documents. This branch interprets the SGA Constitution and Bylaws, resolves disputes, and upholds accountability within student government.

Together, these three branches function as a system of checks and balances, ensuring that SGA remains transparent, effective, and student-centered in its mission to serve the UNT community. Learn about our three branches below!

The Legislative Branch of the Student Government Association (SGA) is embodied by the Student Senate, which holds the authority to enact legislation, allocate funds, and represent the undergraduate student body. Composed of elected senators from each school, college, or academy, as well as at-large representatives, the Senate ensures fair representation for all students. The Vice President of the Student Body serves as the Speaker of the Senate, presiding over meetings, facilitating discussions, and ensuring that legislative processes are carried out effectively. The Senate meets regularly to discuss student concerns, approve expenditures, confirm appointments, and oversee the operations of SGA. Governed by Robert’s Rules of Order and subject to Texas Open Meetings Laws, the Student Senate plays a critical role in shaping policies that impact student life and university governance.
