Ethan Gillis, 2024-25 UNT System Student Regent

Class of 2025, Advertising & Brand Strategy
"There is no doubt in my mind that being plugged in to UNT’s network is an indispensable tool. Once you get involved on campus, you’re exposed to so many people and so many unique opportunities."
What attracted you to UNT?

"What really drew me towards UNT was how it immediately felt like home. I looked at plenty of other schools, but none of them felt right. When I first visited UNT, I was super anxious – however, I realized this anxiety was actually excitement, as it was the first time I ever actually pictured myself as a college student! After that day, there was no question in my mind where I belonged."

What student organizations, programs, activities are you involved in?

"During my time at UNT, I’ve been a member of the Homecoming Crew, an Eagle Ambassador, an executive in the Student Government Association, the secretary of NT40, and the Director of the Student Alumni Association. I also interned in the Vice President for Student Affair’s office and I now work as a Student Recruitment and Program Coordinator for UNT’s international recruitment team!"

How has being involved helped you develop valuable skills that extend beyond the classroom?

"There is no doubt in my mind that being plugged in to UNT’s network is an indispensable tool. Once you get involved on campus, you’re exposed to so many people and so many unique opportunities. From meeting other students to connecting with alumni, it’s been made clear to me that there are so many friendly faces you can meet just through showing up to things."

What advice would you give a student who is looking to make the most out of their college experience?

"You have the rest of your life to be postgrad, so make the most of being in college! Enjoying being a college student and doing college things. Your friends invited you to go somewhere you’ve never been? Go! You we’re offered an internship hundreds of miles away? Make it happen! College is for living life, and life is for taking risks - this is the perfect time to try new things and get out of your comfort zone."

What do you like most about UNT?

"The people, 100%. I’ve met my girlfriends, my closest friends and the best mentors I could ask for just by talking to the other people who call UNT home."

If you could recommend students attend one campus activity or event, what would it be and why?

"Two come to mind! Some of the most fun I’ve had at UNT is at the Bonfire. The vibes are incredible and everyone you know will be there. To anyone graduating, I can’t recommend the senior toast enough. It’s the day before commencement and it’s a special event just for graduating seniors to attend with their closest family. It gives everyone one last chance to get together and celebrate before walking the stage!"

Fun fact about you (interests, hobbies, hometown, passions, etc)?

"My go-to fun fact about myself is that I can play 6 instruments! Tuba was my main instrument and I even spent a year in the college of music, but besides that I play euphonium, trombone, trumpet, cello and piano – and supposedly I know how to sing. I’m originally from Richardson, Texas: Home of the Richardson Public Library, and not much else. When I’m not working, studying or running from one meeting to another I love thrifting, reading and spending time with my friends."

What are your plans after graduating from UNT?

"After graduating from UNT, I want to go back and do it all again! I plan to pursue my masters in higher education at UNT while working full time on campus."
