UNT Community Garden
|
The UNT Community Garden originated as a student-led project funded by the UNT We
Mean Green Fund. The mission of the garden is to promote environmental education,
grow food organically, and foster a community focused on a greener, healthier future
for everyone. Regardless of previous gardening experience, any UNT student, faculty,
or staff member is encouraged to become part of this growing community for collaborative
learning. Our space features twenty raised gardening plots for growing organic vegetables,
fruits, herbs, and flowers. Each plot is managed year-round by garden members who
apply to care for a specific garden plot. Interested drop-in volunteers can join our
volunteer mailing list on our website to be alerted about volunteer opportunities.

UNT Sustainable Arts Garden
|
The UNT Natural Dye Garden was originally founded through the UNT We Mean Green Fund
by Fibers Program students and faculty as a space to allow for the experimental growing
and utilization of natural dye resources. The garden serves as a resource for educating
the UNT community about the benefits of natural dyeing to promote safe, sustainable
behaviors. Today, the UNT Natural Dye Garden continues to emphasize the importance
of sustainable dyeing practices, community engagement, and community education. The
garden has worked with a variety of artists and organizations such as Make Art with
Purpose, Denton County Master Gardeners Association, Big Thought Dallas, and the We
Mean Green Fund's very own Environmental Volunteerism Graduation Cord program. Volunteers
are welcome at scheduled workdays.

UNT Pecan Creek Pollinative Prairie
|
Want to 'bee' a conservationist? Join the UNT community-based four acre native Texas
prairie reconstruction, located in the east field of the Discovery Park campus!! The
UNT Ecology Society for Ecological Restoration students and staff lead UNT volunteers
to remove non-native, invasive plant species and replace them with native Texas grass
and flowering plants to help increase pollinating insects, birds, and ecological services
that prairies provide. Prairies are the most endangered habitat in Texas. Our UNT
Pollinative Prairie helps to connect other prairie habitat islands in DFW and increase
lost biodiversity. We have documented over 200 native species of plants and wildlife
that now call our Prairie home. Over 1000 UNT students and staff have volunteered
since 2016. Volunteer hours can be counted towards the Sustainability Graduation Cord.
We hope that you will learn how to conserve native Texas flowering plants that provide
bees and Monarch butterflies with habitat, and maybe even create a habitat at your
own residential yard space.
