Being part of a sorority like Alpha Phi isn’t just about social events — it’s about being part of a lifelong network that helps prepare its members for future success.

When Bella Rusin, a member of the Alpha Phi sorority at University of North Texas, attended the Disney Institute’s leadership program, she discovered that leadership can come from anywhere—and from anyone. It was a realization that left a lasting impression. "It was a lesson that gave me more confidence in myself as a leader," she says. "I know now that I can actually do it."

The sophomore business marketing student attended the Disney Institute through the Alpha Phi Leadership Institute, made possible by the Alpha Phi Foundation.

Learning to Lead, Disney Style
The immersive three-day leadership development program prepares members to lead with purpose, foster trust, and build a culture of accountability. Alongside almost 175 fellow Alpha Phi members from across the nation, Bella learned skills and best practices, from leading by example to creating shared values and a compelling vision for the future.

“It was a weekend-long program all about leadership, held at a place where leadership is seen and known—Disney,” Bella said.

One key aspect that stood out to her during the program was Disney’s emphasis on attention to detail. While many hear about the Disney experience, seeing it firsthand changed her perspective on leadership and customer service.

“During the day, we attended presentations on leadership and its significance in the outside world. As part of the program, the Disney Institute took us to Hollywood Studios and Epcot for field experiences, where we saw firsthand how Disney employees lead and why Disney is renowned as a magical place.”

Bella realized that Disney’s success is built on countless small details—from the appearance of the parks to staff interactions. Each moment, no matter how small, plays a role in delivering the experience Disney is known for. The experience is something Bella will apply within her own chapter at UNT to build community and engagement.

Building Connections and Lifelong Friendships
One of the most rewarding aspects of the experience was meeting other Alpha Phis from across the country. After attending leadership sessions each day, the students were given time to explore Disney’s parks, allowing them to connect on a more personal level outside of formal programming. The opportunity to bond with sisters was a highlight of the trip.

“My favorite thing about being an Alpha Phi at UNT is the people I’ve met and the opportunities it’s led me to. Like being able to go to Disney and knowing I’ll have sisters for life,” she said.

This experience went beyond leadership development. The Alpha Phi Foundation’s collaboration with the Disney Institute aimed to cultivate better leaders who can carry those skills into the real world. For Bella, being part of a sorority like Alpha Phi isn’t just about social events — it’s about being part of a lifelong network that helps prepare its members for future success.
