The UNT Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) kicked off its Season of Activism with its first speaker, Love and Hip Hop Miami star Amara La Negra, on August 23 in the Coliseum. This year, students voted “activism” as the DLS theme. The goal for this season is to bring in a variety of speakers that are activists in their own right and can connect to the students.

Born and raised in Miami, Florida, La Negra channels the sunshine state for inspiration as musical direction to connect with her fans globally. She conveys a vibrant collage of Spanish and Caribbean experience while channeling a R&B and Hip Hop inspired concept in delivery. Her approach in her life and its obstacles that attempt disruption in her light remains unstoppable.

“Amara La Negra’s lecture was the perfect opening speaker for this season, as she provided our students with her real experiences as an Afro-Latina in the music industry,” said Brittany Landau, coordinator of special projects for the Division of Student Affairs. “It was exactly what our students needed to hear, at just the right time.”

The Distinguished Lecture Series brings noted speakers to campus each year to provide the UNT community with different perspectives and topics of thought. From businessmen and scientists to political figures and celebrities, each event is unique and designed to inform and entertain.
