Orientation Details
How do I register for orientation?

Registration for orientation is available through the MyUNT portal at Click Advising & Orientation and then Register for Orientation. As orientation sessions reach capacity, they are removed from the site and no longer available for registration. 

If you need to change your orientation date, email us at or with your student ID number and the date you wish to change to. As long as the session you wish to change to has not reached registration capacity, we will change your orientation session.

What is my orientation date?

For the most up-to-date list of available orientation sessions, log on to your MyUNT student portal. Only sessions with open spaces will be available. Each orientation session has a registration capacity.

When will I receive check-in information?
Check-in information will be sent in your confirmation email the week leading up to your orientation date. To verify your registration on your MyUNT portal, please visit and click Advising & Orientation then Register for Orientation. You should see a confirmation message at the top of the page and your orientation session selected. For more assistance, please contact our office.
Cost and Payment Options
When do I pay for orientation?

You must provide payment with your reservation to secure a spot in an orientation session. Payment can be made online through your portal or in the Orientation and Transition Programs office (Union 377). Your space will not be reserved until payment is received.

What does my orientation fee cover?

Your fee is used for program implementation and staffing, orientation publications, all orientation materials (bag, t-shirt, pen, etc.), meals, rooms and facilities used during orientation. The fee also provides for year-round orientation programming for all new students.

What if I cannot pay for my orientation?

Financial constraints will not prohibit you from attending orientation. Students can elect to have their full orientation fee deferred to their student account and will have until the beginning of classes to pay the fee. Request a fee deferment through our online form below!

Please note: A fee deferment does not waive your fee, only defers the fee to pay at a later date. All students, including deferred, are responsible for any outstanding orientation charges.

If I am no longer able to make my orientation date, can I reschedule?
If you missed your orientation date or need to reschedule, please email us at or with your student ID number and the date you would like to reschedule to. Please refer to the Freshman Orientation page or Transfer Orientation page to see available sessions.
If I paid and registered for orientation but decide not to attend UNT, can I cancel my orientation?

A student can cancel their orientation registration at least 5 business days prior to their scheduled orientation date and receive a full refund. For more information about our cancellation and refund policies, please visit our Register for Orientation page.

Academic Advising and Course Registration
When will I meet my advisor?

Students will have an academic advising session during their orientation date and will be provided more information about their advising appointment during their college/school meetings.

What should I do if I want to change my major?

The confirmation email you receive prior to your orientation session will have a survey for you to complete, asking you to confirm your major. It is common for students to apply to the university intending to major in something and then change their minds prior to or during orientation. The major confirmation survey will help us share information with the colleges and schools to prepare for your academic advising session. 

Please note, you must be auditioned and accepted into the College of Music before changing your major to Music. 

Freshman Orientation
Do I have to stay overnight during Freshman Orientation?

Freshman Orientation is a 2-day overnight program for students attending sessions 1-11. During these sessions, students stay the night in a residence hall and get an idea of what life as a college student will be like in the fall.

Housing is not provided during Freshman Orientation 12. Freshman Orientation 12 is ideal for commuter students, students planning to commute to and from Denton during the semester.

Housing is not provided during Freshman 13. Students attending Freshman Orientation 13 may move into their fall residence hall home on the first day of orientation. Commuter students are welcome to attend this session but must commute to and from campus during the program.

If I plan to commute during the school year, do I have to stay overnight in the residence hall during Freshman Orientation?

Students attending Freshman Orientation 1-11 stay the night in Kerr Hall during orientation. If you have an extenuating circumstance that prohibits you from staying overnight, you can fill out an orientation housing exemption form that will be reviewed by our staff. If you have a commuter exemption on file with the department of Housing for the upcoming semester, that does not automatically exempt you from the overnight housing requirement during orientation.

Can I make a roommate request for orientation?
Roommate requests are not accepted for Freshman Orientation. If you have a concern about the overnight requirement and wish to speak with a staff member about the process, contact our office at or fill out the orientation housing exemption form. We want to make sure all students feel comfortable during their orientation and will work with you to make sure you have the best experience possible!
What should I bring to Freshman Orientation?
We encourage students to view the Freshman Orientation packing list before arriving to campus for orientation. If you are attending Freshman Orientation 1-11, bring items for your overnight stay on-campus. Linens and pillows are not provided for orientation participants. In addition, we encourage you to bring snacks, a phone charger, and comfortable walking shoes!
Parent and Family Orientation
What will the orientation be like for family members and guests?

Summer/Fall 2024 Parent & Family Orientations are now available for registration! For more details, please visit our website below. Parent & Family Orientation is a special program that runs concurrently with the student orientation program. The program is optional but highly encouraged. Through this program, parents have the opportunity to learn about the many offices, services, academic programs UNT has to offer. While you and your student will have separate itineraries, you will be together several times throughout the experience. Due to the nature of our programs, parents will not be able to attend college meetings, advising sessions, and actual registration. Parents will, however, be able to join their students after registration to help take care of payment if necessary.

Please note: filling out the Parent Information section on your student's MyUNT portal does not register you for the Parent & Family Orientation. Guests must pay via the orientation website to pre-register.

Should I attend the same orientation as my child?
While it is not required that you attend the same orientation as your child, it is strongly encouraged. Some events during orientation are combined with both student and family participants. Most of the time your orientation schedule will be separate. Please be aware that parents and guests are not part of the student academic advising experience. Guests should plan to participate in the parent and guest schedule during orientation if they choose to participate.
