To be considered to be Scrappy, you must meet the following minimum requirements:
- You must be 5ft 9in or taller to audition
- Due to the physical demands of the mascot role, candidates must possess a high level
of stamina, strength, and agility. The position involves extended periods of movement,
including running, jumping, dancing, and performing in high-heat conditions while
wearing a heavy costume. Applicants should be capable of performing in these conditions
safely and effectively for the duration of events.
- Be a current UNT student or be accepted to UNT for the 2025-2026 school year
- Be in good academic standing and disciplinary standing with UNT
- Have a minimum cumulative UNT GPA of 2.25 or higher
- Have health insurance or the ability to take out a health insurance policy through
UNT
- Be able to commit to about 2-4 hours per week, includes some nights and weekends to
attend appearances requests for various events on and off-campus, attend UNT football
and basketball games with the rest of the spirit squads (e.g., cheerleaders, dancers,
and band), and attend mascot practice and meetings.
- Performers are not guaranteed a spot from year to year. Each performer will be evaluated
yearly.

Too short to be Scrappy? Be Scrappy's bodyguard instead! Perks include exclusive North
Texas Spirit and Scrappy merchandise, traveling to events with Scrappy, getting to
go on the field or court at athletic events, assisting with Scrappy's social media

Scrappy Tryouts
If you meet the minimum requirements, we would love to see you tryout for the team!
Date: May 2, 2025
- 1st session 12pm
- 2nd session 6pm
Location: Gateway 132
Both sessions are in the Gateway room 132. You only need to come to 1 of the sessions
to tryout. If you cannot make one of the tryouts times or if there isn't an upcoming
tryout date listed, please fill out the Interest Form.

General Questions
What does Scrappy do?
When you are Scrappy, you are part of an elite group that will experience UNT like
no other student. Mascots not only perform at sporting events, but also makes appearances
at elementary schools, University events, alumni gatherings, orientation, and so much
more! As Scrappy you get to promote Mean Green spirit and excitement on-campus!
How much time does being Scrappy take?
Great question! Being Scrappy is based on your availability and works around your
class schedule. It is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have as a UNT
student! Interested students should consider their class and work schedules, academic
ability, and any other responsibilities on your plate. Listed below are some of the
types of appearances that Scrappy makes throughout the year.
Summer
- Attend a 3-day mascot boot camp
- Appearances at Orientation sessions throughout the summer
- Attend summer camp and practices for a week in mid-July (if selected to attend)
- Return up to a week before school starts to practice and participate in First Flight
events
Fall
- Practice and conditioning
- Attend and perform at football, basketball, soccer, and volleyball games
- Appearances at various UNT and Denton community events
Spring
- Attend and perform at basketball games
- Appearances at various UNT and Denton community events
- Practice with North Texas Cheer for Daytona Beach College Nationals (if selected)
- Practice and prepare a skit for a national mascot competition in Daytona Beach, Florida
(if selected)
What are the perks of being Scrappy?
- You get a scholarship (see more below)
- You get lots of UNT clothes for free! Nike shirts, shorts, and even shoes!
- Scrappy gets to travel to away football games with football, cheerleaders, dancers,
and band!
- Scrappy gets to go to camp at SMU with other University mascots.
- Scrappy gets to travel each year to Daytona Beach, Florida to compete with North Texas
Cheer and in the national mascot competition!
- If you are Scrappy for 4 semesters, you get to wear the Scrappy feet at graduation.
This is the time you get to let the student body know you were Scrappy!
- And best of all, you get to represent UNT everywhere!
How much does it cost to be Scrappy?
There is no cost to you if you are selected to be Scrappy. All travel expenses, mascot
props, uniforms, and any other expenses are provided to you at no cost.
Who can try out to be Scrappy?
To try out to be Scrappy, you must meet the height requirement and you have to be
accepted to UNT or be a current UNT student. You must also have and maintain a 2.25
UNT cumulative GPA.
Are there scholarships available?
Yes, there are scholarships available. Your first and second year as Scrappy, you
will receive $250 a semester (Fall/Spring). Your thrid year and beyond as Scrappy
you will receive $500 per semester (Fall/Spring).
