Student Org of the Month

What is it?

Think your student organization deserves some recognition this month?

Each month, Student Activities chooses to honor a student organization for their dedication and hard work to make the University of North Texas a better campus. We believe their contributions make a difference in the lives of students here at UNT.

The reward for being chosen the Student Organization of the Month is a $100 co-sponsorship from Student Activities that goes towards your organizational activities such as marketing, tabling, an event, or meeting. This student organization will also be announced as the winner in various marketing formats. Lastly, as a new benefit, student organizations that win this award receive the opportunity of priority selection for a storage locker in the Union for the year.

To be considered for the SOTM, an organization must be registered with Student Activities and in good standing with the university. Please note that the organization can only win once a semester to allow everyone a chance at winning. Orgs that receive student service fees are not applicable for the $100 co-sponsorship.

How to Apply or Nominate

Don’t just say your org nominee is outstanding – prove it!

It’s important to use specific and concrete examples to illustrate why your nominee deserves the award.

  • Provide examples of how your nominee has demonstrated outstanding character and is a deserving candidate.
    • Answer who, what, when, where, how/why.
    • Numbers are a great way to demonstrate (number of event attendees, money earned, hours served, etc.).
    • Documentation (forms, flyers, pictures, certificates, etc.) are a good way to support.
  • Well-written nominations are more appealing.
  • Write short sentences that are concise and give specific detail.
  • Support their nomination with your own observations, as well as qualitative and quantitative
  • Provide a complete overview of the nominee or team’s accomplishments. It is important to tell the nominee’s story as you would to a stranger.
  • Create a unique picture of your nominee. Many orgs hold meetings, events, recruit, serve a community, etc. What makes yours stand out? Describe unique characteristics.

For more nomination information, check out How To: Write a Compelling Nomination.

Application Link

Apply for Student Org of the Month on OrgSync by 11:59 pm the 15th of every month!

Student organizations may apply for the award multiple times during the semester provided they do not win.

Please make sure your organization has applied by the 15th of each month September - November, and February - April. We do not award the Student Organization of the Month in December - January or May-August.

Eagle Awards

What is it?

Every year, Student Activities collaborates with the Center for Leadership and Service in the nomination and selection of several awards that recognize outstanding student organizations and individual leadership. At the Eagle Awards ceremony, we recognize UNT's exceptional students, organizations, and advisors.

Eligibility

For organizational awards, only student organizations registered with Student Activities are eligible. Registered student organizations and individuals may not win the same award in consecutive years. For individual awards, only current students, staff, and faculty affiliated with registered student organizations are eligible, assuming they meet all individual award criteria, which may include academic and disciplinary standing, GPA, and/or hours at UNT.

With the exception of the Golden Eagle Award, there is no self-nomination for individual awards; people may only be nominated by someone else (e.g., student leader, advisor, staff member). The Golden Eagle Award is only by self-nomination (i.e., application). Eligibility for the Golden Eagle Award does not require student organization involvement; all student leaders are eligible and encouraged to apply if they meet all award eligibility criteria.

If you have any questions regarding eligibility or selection considerations, contact Student Activities at student.activities@unt.edu or (940) 565.3807.

Judging

Students, Faculty, and Staff Members, Eagle Awards is fast approaching! We humbly ask for your help in judging the applicants. The chosen recipients will be honored at the Eagle Awards banquet in April. Should you agree, you will be provided with applications and a judging rubric at the end of March. Then you will have approximately a week to return your scores. Our goal is to have each person only judge one award!

Interested in judging 2025 Eagle Awards? Check back in early 2025 for information regarding how to sign up!
