Beige Cowell, Music Composition

What attracted you to UNT?

Obviously UNT's College of Music's reputation speaks for itself. I knew this was one of the best music schools in the nation and one of the best jazz programs in the world, and I wanted to be a part of that.

How have you gotten involved in campus?

Last semester I had the privilege of being UNT's first-ever female marching baritone sax player, and I'm currently a part of UNT's 8 O'Clock jazz band as the bari sax player. I am also a member of Composer's Forum, and am in the MusicComedies club, and this spring semester I will be in the production of the musical “Firebringer”, as part of the main cast.

In what ways do you feel that your activities have supported your development?

Having the incredible opportunity to be in such a variety of ensembles from wind/marching band, to jazz, to post-tonal art music, and even musical theatre is priceless. The  people I've had the pleasure of working with and getting to know has been amazing and diverse and taught me so much more about myself and the kind of music I want to write, the communities I want to be a part of and the path I want to make for my own future.

What advice would you give to a former foster care alumni who is looking to attend UNT/who is looking to make the most of their time at UNT?

Take every opportunity you see. If you want to go to a D&D (what is this?) club, then do it. Want to rock climb? Do it! UNT is such an amazing university with so much to offer, and if you made it here, to college, against all odds of what you've been through and the hardships you've faced, then take it by the reins and own your success by enriching your life and experiences. You deserve to be here, so what better way to spend this new time in your life than by living it to the fullest and learning all you can before life's next adventure.
