Art, in its many forms and mediums, can be used as a channel to express personal beliefs,
thoughts, ideas, and interests. Once these ideas are expressed on a canvas, the responsibility
of interpretation is passed to the viewer. Art is often about the viewer's experience
more so than the artwork itself. Communication design works differently. Communication
design is the strategic and purposeful use of visual elements and aesthetics to express
information. In design, the responsibility of artwork is to develop a direct link
between the viewer and the intent of the visuals. Communication designers are storytellers
- the message and audience is just as important as the artwork itself.
The American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) is the largest professional organization for design with hundreds of chapters across the U.S. The University of North Texas AIGA Student Chapter includes undergrad CVAD Visual Communication students who practice all forms of communication design. The AIGA UNT Showcase is a curated exhibition featuring the design submissions of contributing members to our university's chapter. This exhibition features thirteen selected package, publication, typographic exploration, brand identity, art direction, and web and application design pieces from various AIGA UNT communication design students. From print to digital work, each piece was selected for their skillful use of pattern, type, layout, and color to create cohesive visual systems. Every mark - whether it's a pattern on an “Eataly” brochure or a typeface selected for a Buick campaign - represents a purposeful design decision made to appeal to a specific target audience.
