Exhibition by Morgan L Swartz
The goal of this exhibition is to point out a social issue that affects a larger number of people than it intends to. The Christian church, and many other religions, has found ways to canonize the perfection of religious “characters” and remove them from the reality of humanity. By truly and critically reading the Bible, it is easy to see the faults and failures of humankind, therefore pointing out the lack of anyone's right to judge another person. We spend an unreasonable amount of time hating and misunderstanding other human beings. This is the case for any person, whether they are religious or not. The artist only point out this specific group because it is close to home.
The works come from varying media, as the artist enjoys exploring a wide range of approaches to creating. Each piece in this exhibition speaks to the next. The sound pieces speak to the fabric text pieces as much as they speak to paintings. Each piece is about capturing moments, the value of our time, and the reality/romance of our humanity.
The sound pieces focus on the finality of moments and how we remember them in abstracted ways. The print piece does the same, with a single message being told through many individual phrases. Some paintings depict still moments and others show Biblical characters and stories in a way that reminds us how much we should learn from them rather than praising the people within them.
This exhibition is an opportunity to make people think about these small moments to remember. It is also an opportunity to encourage others to start exploring with the way they create. Seconds Wasted looks at our collective memory and how we have treated moments and people within our lives. It asks us how to move on from this point and whether we will have beautiful moments, or ones filled with anxiety and hate.
