Tuberculosis (TB) Screening Requirement
Please call us at 940-565-2333, option 2, to schedule an appointment for TB testing.
UNT requires all incoming International and Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) students who were previously diagnosed or treated for TB or are considered at high risk for TB, as defined by the WHO or CDC, to be screened for TB. High-risk students must be screened for TB no earlier than six months before their first term of study on the UNT campus and will not be able to register for their second-semester classes without being screened and, if necessary, tested. After completing the screening form, some students may be required to have a TB blood test. Students will be notified via the SHWC's patient portal if testing is required and what steps are necessary to complete testing.
Students may either be tested at the SHWC or provide documentation to SHWC verifying that they were previously tested for TB in the United States and report the results of their TB blood test using the Tuberculosis Screening Record for Outside Providers form. The documentation must clearly show the date the test was given and when it was read.
Documentation for the TB test will be accepted if TB testing was done in the United States no more than six (6) months before the first day of the student's first term of study at the University.
Students who fail to meet TB requirements will have a registration block placed on their account.
All communication after the screening form has been completed will be through the patient portal. Students will need to check their messages there for any further information.
Required Steps:
- Complete the Patient TB Screening Form on the online patient portal at myosh.unt.edu as soon as possible.
- A nurse will review your form and contact you if further blood testing is needed. Students will be notified via the SHWC's patient portal if testing is required and the steps necessary to complete testing. Students will be required to complete additional steps if a test is positive or unclear.
- Once the screening process is complete, the SHWC will remove the TB block from your student account.

The University's Responsibilities
UNT must enforce the requirement that you have adequate health insurance coverage continuously during your UNT residence. UNT residence is defined as that continuous period from initial orientation and enrollment or employment, including holidays, through graduation or final separation from the university.
International Student Responsibilities
- International students are required by the University to provide proof of adequate health insurance coverage each time they register for classes.
- International students may waive the University endorsed student insurance policy
in only three instances:
- An international student has comparable employment insurance through a U.S. employer group policy.
- An international student has comparable coverage through the employment of a parent or relative through a U.S. employer group policy.
- An international student has a government sponsorship. *These waivers are processed in the Sponsored Student Office, Marquis Hall, room 106.
Students must also provide Medical Evacuation and Repatriation Coverage, available as a separate policy through the University-endorsed insurance carrier, United Healthcare Student Resources.
Student Reference Guide
A student reference guide for waiving or activating student insurance prior to the end of the enrollment period is available.
Please note that insurance coverage is for a continuous period of time. Should you graduate or separate from the University during that period of time, a refund will not be issued.
International Student Insurance Frequently Asked Questions (Spring 2022 update)
Why do I need my insurance card?
If you need to go to the hospital or to an off-campus provider, you need to present your insurance card. Your insurance card contains the information a doctor's office or hospital needs in order to file your insurance claim so that your insurance can pay for their portion of your visit.
How can I get my insurance card?
International students will receive a welcome email from UnitedHealthcare Student Resources (UHCSR) to their UNT student email address three to five days after January 6, 2022. This welcome email will provide instructions on how to set up your UHCSR MyAccount, where you can print your insurance card. You can also download the UHCSR Mobile App (search for UHCSR on your device's app store) so you can access your card on your phone. If you don't receive the welcome email, you can also go to unt.myAHPcare.com and look under the Account Information section for the Electronic ID card option.
How will I receive information about my student insurance coverage?
The welcome email and all other communications from the student insurance carrier UnitedHealthcare Student Resources (UHCSR) and the insurance plan administrator Academic Health Plans (AHP) will come to your UNT student email address. If you are not receiving emails from AHP or UHCSR, check the email address listed in your student account at my.unt.edu, and update the address if necessary.
How do I know what my insurance covers?
A quick overview of plan benefits is available for students on the IELI, OPT, and general international student Plan Highlight Sheets. If you have questions about whether a specific service will be covered, please call UHCSR customer service at 1 (800) 767-0700 or email them at customerservice@UHCSR.com.
Visiting the Student Health and Wellness Center (SHWC) is the most cost-effective option when you have the UNT student insurance plan. If you choose to see an in-network, off-campus provider, you will have a higher copay ($50.00), and you will have to meet your $500.00 deductible before the insurance begins to pay a portion of your cost for labs and x-rays from in-network, off-campus providers. Your deductible is $1,000.00 if you see an out-of-network provider.
How are payments for the insurance plan applied to my student account?
Payment for the total cost of an insurance plan for coverage spanning an entire academic year is split into two payments- fall and spring. The spring payment includes the additional cost for coverage throughout the summer.
How do I know if an off-campus provider is in-network?
Off-campus providers need to be within a 50-mile radius of UNT, and they need to be part of the UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus PPO network. You can look up in-network doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies by going to the Find a Provider section of https://unt.myahpcare.com.
How can I find more information about waiving the student insurance?
Go to https://unt.myahpcare.com/waiver for more information.
