ADD/ADHD
The SHWC does not diagnose Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorder (ADD/ADHD); however, the SHWC does provide medication management for students
with ADD/ADHD.
Students without a prior diagnosis of ADHD
- Contact UNT Psychology Clinic at Terrell Hall (940-565-2631) for evaluation. Anticipate charge fees and waiting list to complete neuropsychological
testing. Students may also seek evaluation at a comparable community-based testing
facility.
- Submitted test results/records will be reviewed within 10 business days after receipt from the testing facility.
- If test results do NOT support or are inconclusive of ADHD diagnosis, then further
psychological testing and psychiatric evaluation will be recommended.
- If the results are suggestive of ADHD and other mental health conditions are present,
then further psychiatric evaluation may be considered. Students with complex mental
health conditions and co-existing ADHD may be referred to a higher level of medical
care than is available at the SHWC.
- If test results support ADHD diagnosis, then treatment will be considered, and the
student will be scheduled for an initial evaluation appointment at the SHWC. Treatment
may include medication, counseling, and/or referral to the Office of Disability Access
(ODA). Follow-up appointments are typically monthly for the first 3 months and then
transition to every other month. Re-evaluation may be required at the provider's discretion
if indicated.
Students with a prior diagnosis and treatment for ADHD
- Before making an appointment with SHWC, currently diagnosed students must send their
records showing official ADHD diagnosis, including any records of psychological testing,
as well as recent physician treatment records from the past several years, if applicable,
to include office visit notes with prescribed medications.
- Fax records to SHWC at (940) 369-7042. Attn: Dr. Menard.
- Submitted test results/records will be reviewed within 10 business days after receipt, and the student will be contacted of eligibility.
- If records are deemed satisfactory, then the student will be seen for continued treatment.
- If prior records are not satisfactory to the reviewing provider(s), then additional
medical records may be requested, or the student may be referred for additional neuropsychological
testing and evaluation.
Prescriptions for controlled substance medications
Drugs such as Adderall, Ritalin, and Vyvanse are classified as controlled substances
and, therefore have restrictions on how they can be prescribed.
- SHWC providers will only prescribe a one-month supply of controlled substances at
a time and will not postdate prescriptions for controlled substances.
- All prescriptions for controlled substance medications are electronically prescribed
in accordance with Texas and federal law.
- Lost or stolen prescriptions will not be replaced.
- The Texas Prescription Monitoring Program will be reviewed prior to each visit to
assess for proper prescription usage.
- Urine drug testing will be required at the first ADHD appointment and at least once
per year, at random intervals. There is an additional charge for urine testing
- The use of marijuana and other non-prescribed substances may affect ADHD treatment.
Continued use of these substances negatively impacts attention and counteracts the
effectiveness of ADHD medications.
