Tuberculosis (TB) Screening Requirements

UNT requires all incoming International and Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) students who meet one of the following criteria to be screened for TB.

Students Must Be Screened if:

  • Previously diagnosed or treated for TB.
  • Considered at high-risk for TB (as defined by the WHO or CDC).
Screening Guidelines for Students at High-Risk for TB:
  • Students must complete TB screening no earlier than 6 months before the first day of their first term at UNT.
  • Students will not be able to register for second‑semester classes until they have been screened and, if needed, tested.
  • After completing the TB Screening Form (in the Patient Portal), some students may be required to have a TB blood test.
  • Students will receive a notice in the Patient Portal if testing is needed, along with instructions on how to complete it.
Communication
  • All communication after the TB Screening Form has been completed will be through the Patient Portal.
  • Please check your student email for notifications about new messages in the Patient Portal.
Students who do not to meet TB requirements will have a registration block placed on their account.

  1. Complete the TB Screening Form in the Forms section of the Patient Portal as soon as possible. 
  2. A nurse will review your form and contact you through the Patient Portal if further blood testing is required.
  3. Once all steps of the screening process are complete, the SHWC will remove the TB block from your student account.

Students may be tested at the SHWC or provide documentation to the SHWC verifying that they were previously tested for TB in the United States.

Documentation Requirements
  • Results of the TB blood test, and required additional testing for positive tests, can be reported using the TB Screening Record Form. Please fax completed forms to the SHWC. 
  • The documentation must clearly show the date the blood test and any additional testing, if required, was performed. 
  • The TB test, and if required, additional testing, must have been done in the United States no earlier than 6 months before the first day of the student's first term of study at UNT.

International Student Responsibilities
  • International students are required to provide proof of adequate health insurance coverage each time they register for classes.
  • Students must also provide medical evacuation and repatriation coverage, available as a separate policy through AHP.

UNT's Responsibilities

  • UNT must enforce the requirement that you have adequate health insurance coverage continuously during your UNT residence.
  • UNT residence is defined as that continuous period from initial orientation and enrollment or employment, including holidays, through graduation or final separation from the university.

Waivers
Waivers
International students may waive the University-Endorsed Student Health Insurance Policy (SHIP) in only three instances:
  1. Comparable employment insurance through a U.S. employer group policy.
  2. Comparable coverage through the employment of a parent or relative through a U.S. employer group policy.
  3. Government sponsorship (these waivers are processed at the Sponsored Student Office in Marquis Hall).
